“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I think she was waiting for something.”
“What?”
Benjamin was silent.
Then I heard movement on his end.
A door creaked.
“Benjamin?”
“I’m inside the house.”
My heart leapt.
“You broke into my house?”
“No.”
“The door was unlocked.”
“I locked it before I left.”
“I know.”
“How could you know that?”
“Because someone was here when I arrived.”
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“Who?”
“They were gone before I got through the door.”
“Did you see them?”
“No.”
“Then leave. Go outside and call the police.”
“Hannah.”
“Benjamin, listen to me.”
“I found something.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“In the hallway.”
I knew that hallway.
The old narrow corridor between the kitchen and my mother’s bedroom.
“What did you find?”
“A photograph.”
My eyes went to the one in my hand.
“Of what?”
“A football field.”
Douglas looked at me.
I couldn’t speak.
