When Douglas and I were 19, we made a promise that if neither of us was married by the time we turned 60, we would find each other again.

“She wrote another name.”

“What name?”

“Margaret Ellis.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“My mother?”

Benjamin heard him.

“Is that Lucas?”

Lucas stared at my phone.

“How do you know my name?”

“Because Evelyn wrote about you too.”

Lucas went completely still.

“That doesn’t make sense. I wasn’t born until 1990.”

“I know.”

No one moved.

My mother had supposedly written the letter in 1987.

Three years before Lucas was born.

I forced myself to speak.

“Benjamin, are you sure the letter was written in 1987?”

“That’s what I thought.”

“What do you mean?”

“I had the paper examined.”

My fingers tightened.

“And?”

“The paper is old. The envelope is old. Most of the letter was written in 1987.”

“Most?”

“There was a second page added later.”

“When?”

“The handwriting expert couldn’t be exact.”

I could barely hear myself.

“How much later?”

“Years.”

I looked at Douglas.

“So my mother continued updating the letter.”
