When Douglas and I were 19, we made a promise that if neither of us was married by the time we turned 60, we would find each other again.

Benjamin continued.

“There are two teenagers sitting under some bleachers.”

My chest tightened painfully.

Douglas and me.

“On the back there’s a date.”

“Which date?”

“August 14, 1985.”

The night of the promise.

I remembered it.

The terrible dates.

The football bleachers.

Douglas’s pinky wrapped around mine.

If we’re both still single when we’re sixty…

Benjamin’s voice trembled now.

“There’s writing underneath.”

I closed my eyes.

“What does it say?”

He read slowly.

Douglas kept his promise.

Now Hannah must keep hers.

My eyes opened.

Douglas stared at me.

Lucas had gone pale.

The room fell completely silent.

Then Benjamin whispered one last thing.

“Hannah, there’s someone else in this photograph.”

“What?”

“I didn’t notice at first because they’re standing far behind you.”

My hand shook around the phone.

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Describe them.”

“It’s a woman.”

I looked at Douglas.
