My husband.s. hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor. – usnews

He looked at me.

“Tonight, when I heard her screaming, I knew I didn’t have another second to waste.”

I bent forward and pressed his hand against my forehead.

“I should have listened when you tried to warn me.”

Dad shook his head.

“You loved him. He knew how to make his cruelty look like concern. He told you he wanted her to succeed. He told me the same thing.”

Tears rolled down my face.

“But I live with her. I should have known.”

“Maybe there were things you missed,” he said gently. “But the person responsible for hurting her is the person who chose to hurt her. Don’t take his choices and turn them into your punishment.”

I sat beside him for a long time.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“There is one more thing you need to know.”

I looked up.
