I felt sick.
“He threatened to keep her away from you?”
“He said he would convince you that I was senile. He even suggested that I was becoming dangerous around children.”
I stared at my father, struggling to process the cruelty of it.
“He made you afraid to tell me?”
“He made me afraid that if I pushed too hard, he’d isolate you both from everyone who could help.”
Dad looked down at his hands.
“So I started documenting things. I wrote down the dates when I heard her crying. I saved the messages he sent me. And I started calling whenever I heard something that made me think she might be in danger.”
“Why didn’t you call the police before tonight?”
“I should have.”
His voice broke.
“I kept hoping I’d find a way to get you to see what was happening without making things worse for your daughter. I thought I could talk to you privately. I thought I had more time.”
