My husband hammered a nail into our 7-year-old daughter’s foot to force her to study instead of running, ignoring her bloody screams. When my father burst in to save her, my husband brutally smashed the heavy hammer into his head, leaving him bleeding on the floor.
I had never heard my daughter scream like that.
I was downstairs when the sound tore through the house. By the time I reached her room, my husband was standing over her with the hammer still in his hand, while she clutched the edge of her desk and sobbed.
He looked at me as if I were the one interrupting something normal.
“She keeps getting up,” he said. “She wants to run around instead of studying. Now she’ll remember.”
For one second, I couldn’t process what I was seeing. Then my daughter reached for me and cried, “Mommy, please.”
I moved toward her, but my husband stepped between us.
