“Don’t touch her,” I said.
“She needs discipline.”
“She needs a doctor.”
I reached for my phone, but he slapped it out of my hand. It skidded beneath the desk.
That was when my father came charging through the doorway.
He had been coming over to return a set of house keys. Instead, he’d heard his granddaughter screaming and went straight toward her.
“I’m getting her out of here.”
My husband swung around.
“Stay out of my family.”
Dad didn’t slow down. “She’s my family too.”
Then my husband raised the hammer.
I shouted his name, but he swung before Dad could get between him and my daughter.
Dad collapsed beside the bed.
“Grandpa!” my daughter screamed.
I dropped beside him. He was breathing, but he wasn’t responding to me. Behind us, my husband stood frozen with the hammer hanging at his side.
For the first time that night, he looked frightened.
