I spent 6 hours cooking Thanksgiving dinner. At 7 pm, my son arrived with 6 guests from my daughter-in-law’s family. They sat down like they owned my home. My DIL said, “Would you mind eating in the kitchen, Dad?” I just smiled and walked into the kitchen… what I did next had everyone screaming. – usnews

“There is a difference, and I have 11 months of documentation that explains exactly what that difference cost.”

“He’s your son,” Stuart Holt said from somewhere behind Trey’s shoulder.

The voice of a man who expected that statement to resolve something.

I looked at Stuart Holt for a long moment.

He was standing in my living room in front of my fireplace beneath the photographs on my wall with the confidence of a man who had been told this room was waiting for him.

“Yes,” I said. “He is.”

I turned back to Vic.

“The paperwork is in the office at the yard. Ben has the filing instructions.”

Vic nodded once, steady as he had ever been.

Trey took one step forward, his voice dropped to something I had not heard from him since he was a boy.

Something younger and more raw than anger.

“Dad, why would you choose him over me?”
