Stuart Hol found his voice first.
“What is this?”
He directed it at the room in general, which meant he was directing it at no one in particular, which meant he already understood that the room was no longer organized around him.
I turned to face my son.
“Effective as of tonight,” I said. “Vic Ostrander assumes full operational authority of Finch Outdoor Services. Client relations, crew scheduling, material accounts, and vendor contracts all run through him. His decisions are final. Mine will be available to him as counsel whenever he asks for it.”
Trey went through several things in rapid succession.
Disbelief, then something desperate, then anger, which was the one he landed on because it was the most familiar.
“You can’t do that,” he said. “I am the operations manager. I have been running this company.”
“You have been using this company,” I said.
Not loud, not hard, just true the way a measurement is true.
