He continued.
“I’m not coming to ask you to take me back.”
“Good.”
“I know that door is closed.”
“Very.”
“I want to apologize to them.”
“They may not want that.”
“I know.”
“And you don’t get to use guilt.”
“I know.”
“And if Grace wants five minutes, you get five minutes.”
“Understood.”
“And if Emily refuses to see you?”
His voice softened.
“Then I go home.”
That was the first moment I believed Daniel might actually be changing.
He arrived Saturday morning.
Emily refused to hug him.
Grace did.
Daniel did not complain.
We met in a park.
He sat on a bench while the girls stood in front of him.
“I owe both of you an apology.”
Grace looked at the ducks.
Emily crossed her arms.
Daniel continued.
“I made you feel less important than my work and my choices.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Daniel swallowed.
