Five minutes after our divorce, my ex told me, “Take the girls—I have a son on the way now.” So I quietly took our daughters and left the country.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why didn’t you come to my presentation?”

“I chose not to.”

The honesty startled her.

“I could tell you I was busy. I could blame work. But I chose something else.”

Emily’s chin trembled.

“You always chose something else.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know what it feels like to keep looking at the door because maybe your dad will walk in.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You missed everything.”

“I know.”

“You missed my award.”

“I know.”

“You missed Grace singing.”

“I know.”

“You missed Mom crying in the kitchen when you thought we were asleep.”

Daniel looked at me.

I looked away.

Emily wiped her face angrily.

“And then you acted excited because you were having a boy.”

Daniel’s eyes closed.

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Grace finally looked at him.
