“You call eight million enough?”
“For now.”
I rubbed my forehead.
“I’m starting to understand why everyone in your family needs financial therapy.”
“Technically, I’m in your extended family now.”
“Don’t make it worse.”
For the first time in weeks, I laughed until tears came.
Then Lucas said something that changed my mood.
“Daniel wants to visit London.”
I became quiet.
“Why?”
“To see the girls.”
“He could have asked me.”
“He’s afraid you’ll say no.”
“That has never stopped him before.”
“He’s changing.”
I looked toward my office wall.
Maybe.
But change after consequences is easy to promise.
Sustaining it when life becomes comfortable again is different.
“He needs to ask.”
“I’ll tell him.”
Daniel called that evening.
“I’d like to come to London.”
“For how long?”
“A weekend.”
“Why?”
“To see Emily and Grace.”
“Not me?”
“No.”
The answer surprised me in the best possible way.
