Hayley arranged the plates.
My tiny kitchen became crowded and noisy.
There weren’t enough chairs, so we ate around the little table, taking turns sitting and standing.
The pancakes were uneven.
The dishes didn’t match.
My apartment was nothing like the beautiful home I’d once owned.
But as I watched my children laugh together, something inside me shifted.
For years, I’d complained that family life was boring.
I’d wanted excitement.
Freedom.
Romance.
A chance to feel young again.
And I’d sacrificed nearly everything chasing those feelings.
Now, standing in a cramped kitchen with pancake batter on my shirt, I realized how much I’d misunderstood.
Holly held up her plate.
“Dad, mine looks funny!”
Ryan laughed so hard he nearly dropped his fork.
Hayley started teasing him.
And I found myself laughing with them.
Then Ryan looked around the kitchen and smiled.
“This is nice, Dad.”
