For a moment, jealousy returned.
I remembered the Paris photograph.
The home we’d once shared.
The life I’d thrown away because I’d convinced myself happiness existed somewhere else.
It still hurt.
But this time, I didn’t interrupt them.
I didn’t complain.
I didn’t try to make Helena feel guilty for moving on.
I simply watched her smile.
And accepted that she deserved the happiness she’d found.
The following Saturday, my children came to my apartment for breakfast.
Holly wanted pancakes shaped like animals.
I tried making a rabbit.
It looked more like a melted cloud.
Hayley burst out laughing.
“Dad, that’s not a rabbit!”
“It’s an artistic interpretation,” I defended myself.
Ryan examined the frying pan.
“I think we should stick to circles.”
Soon, all three children were laughing.
Ryan took over making the next batch.
Holly insisted on decorating hers with fruit.
