While the ambulance was taking Dad to the hospital, he slipped an envelope in my hand and whispered

“Sarah, the key in the envelope opens a bank vault where I kept the documents and letters I received from Emily. I’ve also put there the savings I’ve collected for her over the years, as well as the documents that show what I intend to leave them. I don’t want anyone to die before the truth comes to light.”

The last lines were more forfeit.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m not asking you to judge your mother. I’m just asking you not to let Emily think her existence was a mistake I wanted to hide forever.”

“I love you, my father.”

I’m left with the letter open in my hands. I didn’t know if I was more angry, sadder or more scared. A part of me wanted to enter my father’s room and ask him how he could hide something like that. Another part wanted to go back to childhood, at a time when my family seemed simple and whole.
