While the ambulance was taking Dad to the hospital, he slipped an envelope in my hand and whispered

All those memories, which I considered normal, suddenly took on a different meaning.

But the letter wasn’t over.

“Three years ago, Rebecca passed away. Emily already had her own life, but the loss of her mother affected her enormously. I tried to get close to her. He told me he didn’t want a father who only shows up when his conscience weighs on him. I couldn’t argue with her.”

“Last year, Emily contacted me again. Not for the money. Not to ask me anything. He just wanted to know if I was willing to be honest, for once.”

“We met. We talked for hours. She showed me photos of her life, told me about the service and the man she was going to get married to. He told me he wanted to meet you.”

My heart started to beat me strongly.

“I promised to tell you. But I came home, looked at your mother and got scared. Not by her. Of all the evil we had done and the fact that the truth could have destroyed the little silence that remained to us.”
