When my husband said to my daughter, ‘You don’t even realise how beautiful your silhouette is’

Emilia smiled shyly.

My wedding dress.

For a few seconds I didn’t understand.

— Your dress of… what?

Daniel took a few photos from the bed.

Emilia is engaged.

I looked at my daughter.

– With whom?

She almost started laughing.

– Mom, with Andrei. We’ve been together for three years.

I knew Andrew. I liked him. But I knew absolutely nothing about any marriage proposal.

When did it happen?

– Three weeks ago.

Just when the whispers started.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

Why does Daniel know, and I don’t?

Emilia bites her lip.

Because I wanted to surprise you.

Then he told me everything.

Andrei asked her to be married in a weekend in Sinaia. Emilia wanted to tell me for Christmas, but before that she planned to rework something I had ever thought was lost.

The dress in front of me was my mother’s wedding dress.

Emilia’s grandmother.

After her death, I had kept it for years in a box, until an infiltration from the old apartment had seriously damaged it. I thought she had been thrown away with other things affected.

But Daniel had recovered it without telling me.

Years ago he had taken her to a seamstress, hoping that one day the material could be restored.

Emilia found out by chance.

And he decided he wanted to use parts of his grandmother’s dress for his own wedding dress.
