I let out a bitter laugh.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I was twenty-two, I was terrified and I was a fool. After the explosion, he became obsessed with helping you. She left her job twice because she refused to leave you alone. He borrowed money. He stopped sleeping.”
I didn’t say anything.
“Then one night,” Sarah continued, “he heard you telling your mother that you were afraid to spend your whole life depending on him.”
I remembered that conversation.
He had been crying.
He had said:
If Daniel stays, he’ll end up being my nurse instead of my husband.
Sarah nodded.
“He heard you.”
My eyes were burning.
“And his solution was to disappear?”
“He convinced himself that if he left, you would be forced to discover how strong you were.”
“That didn’t match him to decide.”
“No,” Sarah said immediately. “And then he understood it too.”
