“Whose child is this?”
Sarah took a deep breath.
“My daughter.”
That confused me even more.
“Then why are you here?”
Sarah put her hand in her bag and pulled out an envelope.
My name was written on the front.
I recognized that letter immediately.
Daniel.
“I found it in his things,” he said. “Years ago he told me that if the time ever came when this baby needed someone … I should take it with you.”
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“I know.”
“He abandoned me.”
Sarah’s expression changed.
“No, Emily. That’s what he wanted you to believe.”
I felt the anger growing inside me.
“I read your note.”
“I know. He showed me a copy.”
I felt a knot in my stomach.
Sarah came in and left the envelope on my table.
“He left because he thought that staying would destroy your life.”
