For five years I had believed that my father cared more about money than I did.
Now I understood that I had been saving him and preparing a future for me.
But I also understood something painful.
I could have shown her love while she was alive.
He could have told me he was proud of me.
We could have played music together.
No amount of money could give us back those years.
The following Sunday I invited Frank to the studio.
I took my repaired guitar and played the song I had written for my mother when I was sixteen.
For the first time in a long time, I managed to finish it.
And when I got to the last verse, I added a new phrase:
“Dad, I wish we could have played one last song together.”
Frank wiped his tears.
And I finally cried for the father I had lost, for the father I had misunderstood and for all those years that we could never recover.
