When I was 18,simo my father started charging me 250 dollars a month for my room. Five years later, after her funeral, her best friend handed me a box and whispered, “Your father wanted you to open it only after her death…”

Inside was a wooden box.

Sixty envelopes.

Each envelope had written a month and a year.

I opened the first one.

250 dollars.

The second.

Another 250 dollars.

I opened three more.

Each one contained exactly the amount I had paid him.

Sixty months. Five years. 15,000 dollars.

All the rent money was there.

Above was a handwritten note.

“This money was always yours. I wanted you to have something to start your future with. But I should have told you. I should have helped you when you needed me, instead of letting you fight alone. Forgive me, son.”

I went back to the computer.

Dad kept looking at the camera.

“I’m proud of you,” he whispered. I’ve always been.

Then he took a deep breath, with difficulty.

And I love you, champ. Much more than I ever knew how to prove.

The screen turned black.

I sat there for a long time, pressing his letter against my chest.
