For a long time, I thought silence was a way of keeping the peace.
I paid the bills, did the shopping,S. cooked, and cleaned, while my husband, Oleg, gave his entire salary to his mother every month.
When I finally dared to ask him how he could live in my apartment without contributing a single cent, his response was a shout:
“I’m a man, not an ATM!”
I didn’t answer him at the time.
But that same night, when he went into the kitchen looking for his dinner, he realized that something had changed forever.
A Table Set for One
When Oleg entered the kitchen, he didn’t find what he expected.
On the table sat a single plate of stew, a basket of bread, and a blue folder.
I was sitting calmly in my chair. Before he could approach the pot, I said:
“You can sit down… if you paid for this dinner.”
He gave a mocking laugh and reached toward the pot.
