He looked me straight in the eye and whispered:
“She’s not my daughter, Margaret … it’s much more complicated than that. And you are part of this story too.” 😨

Robert stared at me for a long time before he continued.
“Margaret,” he said quietly, “do you remember the summer before we met?”
Of course I remembered.
I was twenty-one and living with my parents in a small Pennsylvania town. It was a stage of my life that I almost never talked about.
Before Robert there had been someone else.
His name was Thomas.
We were young, reckless and we were convinced that we would end up getting married.
But then Thomas disappeared from my life almost overnight.
A few months later, I found out that I was pregnant.
My parents felt deeply ashamed. At that time, a pregnancy outside of marriage was something that many families were trying to hide.
I was sent to live with an aunt who was residing in several villages away.
When the baby was born, they barely let me see her.
I remember hearing his cry.
Hours later, my mother walked into the room and told me that the baby had not survived.
For 58 years, I believed him.
I looked at Robert.
My hands started shaking.
“What does all that have to do with that woman?”
Robert looked down.
“Your daughter didn’t die.”
I felt like the room disappeared around me.
I couldn’t talk.
Robert continued.
“Your parents arranged an adoption. They never thought to tell you the truth.”
I stared at it.
“But you didn’t even know me then.”
“No,” he replied. “I heard years later.”
Apparently, several years after we got married, Robert happened to meet one of my aunts at a grocery store.
She recognized him and asked if I had ever discovered the truth.
Robert had no idea what he meant.
Finally, my aunt told her everything.
My daughter had been adopted by a marriage called Eleanor and Frank Mitchell.
Robert wanted to tell me immediately.
But by then we already had two young children and, according to him, my mother begged him not to destroy the family for something that “could no longer be changed.”
