He looked at the women watching them.
“I just don’t like abusers.”
Several inmates exchanged surprise glances.
Brenda’s friends had stopped smiling completely.
Brenda moved again to Lily.
Before he could get close, a guard shouted from the other side of the courtyard.
“ENOUGH!”
Several officers headed towards them.
Everyone expected them to take Lily.
But something strange happened.
One of the oldest guards stopped when he saw her.
He stared at Lily’s face.
Then he looked at the way he was standing.
And then he looked at her again.
“Wait…”
Lily looked at him.
The guard frowned.
“Lily Carter?”
The courtyard was silent again.
Brenda looked at each other.
“Do you know her?”
The guard did not respond immediately.
Then he said:
“I’ve seen her before.”
One of the inmates whispered:
“Where?”
The guard looked at Lily.
“You worked with the state self-defense program.”
Lily looked down.
Brenda fixedly observed her.
“What program?”
The guard continued.

“Before I came here, I taught women to defend themselves.”
A murmur walked through the courtyard.
Brenda’s expression changed.
The quiet, thin woman she had spent three days humiliating was not helpless at all.
Lily looked at the guard.
“That was a long time ago.”
Brenda took a small step back.
For the first time, it seemed unsafe.
But Lily didn’t smile.
He didn’t celebrate.
Instead, he walked towards the cigarette crushed.
Brenda blinked.
“What are you doing?”
Lily squatted, picked it up and threw it into the garbage can.
Brenda stared at her.
“After all that, you’re still going to pick it up?”
Lily looked at her.
“I’m cleaning this area.”
Then he gestured towards Brenda.
“But next time, pick up your garbage yourself.”
Several women nearby laughed.
This time, they weren’t laughing at Lily.
Brenda’s face strained.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked slowly around him.
To her own friends.
To the guards.
The women I had bullied for years.
All eyes were on her.
Finally, Brenda walked to the wall and took the second broom.
The courtyard was silent again.
He started helping Lily clean.
No one could believe it.
Not because Lily would have defeated her.
Not because someone would have forced her.
But because, for the first time in years, someone had confronted Brenda without trying to humiliate her in return.
