PART 2 — THE BABY WASN’T A STRANGER

“But I was scared.”

Vanessa laughed once.

A painful laugh.

“You were scared?”

“Yes.”

“Eric, I came home and found a baby in our bed.”

“I know.”

“I thought you cheated on me.”

“I know.”

“And you still said nothing?”

His silence answered her.

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen island and placed both hands on the counter.

She needed something solid.

Something real.

Because her entire understanding of the last three weeks had shifted.

“Why didn’t Claire keep him?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I don’t know how much time I have.”

She looked at Noah.

“And I refuse to let my son experience what I experienced.”

The room softened.

Vanessa looked at the baby.

He was tiny.

Completely innocent.

A child caught in circumstances he never chose.

Then she looked back at Eric.

“But why you?”

Eric hesitated.

Claire answered.

“Because Eric knows what it feels like to be unwanted.”

That sentence stayed in the air.

Vanessa looked at her husband.

And suddenly she saw something she had never noticed before.

All those years.

All those moments when Eric quietly donated clothes to shelters.

When he helped teenagers aging out of foster care.

When he stopped to talk to homeless people instead of walking past them.

She thought it was kindness.

She never realized it came from a place of remembering.

Eric had spent his whole life trying to make sure nobody else felt invisible.

Including this baby.

But Vanessa still had one question.

A question she needed answered.

“Where is Noah’s father?”

Claire’s face changed.

Eric looked at her.

Neither answered immediately.

That silence told Vanessa everything.

“There is something else.”

Claire looked away.

Finally, Eric spoke.

“His father doesn’t know about him.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

Claire wiped a tear.

“Because Noah’s father disappeared before he was born.”

“Why?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to show you this.”

She handed it to Vanessa.

On the front were handwritten words.

FOR NOAH — WHEN HE IS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THE TRUTH.

Vanessa slowly opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

And the moment she saw the face in the picture…

Her entire body went cold.

Because she knew him.

The man standing beside Claire in the photo wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t someone from Eric’s past.

He was someone from hers.

Someone she had trusted.

Someone she had never imagined would be connected to this story.

Vanessa looked up slowly.

Her voice barely came out.

“Where did you get this?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because that man came looking for Noah three days ago.”

Eric stepped forward.

“And he wasn’t asking for the baby.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What was he asking for?”

Eric’s face turned serious.

“He wanted the DNA results.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at the baby.

Then at the photograph in her hand.

Then at her husband.

And she finally understood…

The baby wasn’t the biggest secret in the house.

The real secret was why someone was willing to fight to keep the truth about Noah buried.

And what Vanessa was about to discover would change everything she thought she knew about her own past.
