PART 2 — THE BABY WASN’T A STRANGER

The morning sunlight spilled through the living room curtains, painting the floor in golden lines, but she felt as if she had been thrown into the middle of a storm.

A woman was sitting on her couch.

In her house.

Holding the baby.

And Eric was standing across from her, looking more worried than Vanessa had ever seen him.

For a moment, she wondered if she was still dreaming.

Maybe the exhaustion from the flight had finally caught up with her. Maybe her mind was creating the worst possible explanation because she had walked into a situation she didn’t understand.

But then she heard the woman speak again.

“Eric, Vanessa deserves to know the truth. She’s been gone for three weeks. She comes home expecting her husband to be waiting for her, and instead she finds a baby sleeping beside him. Do you understand how that looks?”

Eric lowered his head.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t,” the woman replied softly. “Because you’re thinking about protecting everyone except yourself.”

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around the edge of the wall.

Protecting everyone?

What did that mean?

Her first instinct was anger.

She had trusted Eric completely.

They had been married for six years. They had built a quiet, comfortable life together in San Diego. They weren’t the couple who posted every moment online or constantly talked about how perfect their marriage was.

They were the kind of couple who drank coffee together every morning.

The kind who remembered small details.

The kind who had survived difficult years because they believed they were a team.

And now she was standing in the hallway, listening to her husband whisper about DNA results with another woman.

Her stomach twisted.

She was about to walk into the room and demand answers when the baby suddenly started crying.

The sound stopped everyone.

Eric immediately moved toward the baby.

Not with guilt.

Not with panic.

With instinct.

He picked the infant up carefully, holding him against his chest.

“Hey, buddy,” Eric whispered. “It’s okay. I’m here.”

The baby calmed almost instantly.

Vanessa watched silently.

There was something in the way Eric held that child.

Something familiar.

Something gentle.

She had seen that look before.

Years earlier, when they had talked about having children, Eric had admitted something she never forgot.

“I don’t know if I’d be a good father,” he had told her one night while they sat on their apartment balcony.

Vanessa had laughed.

“Why would you say that?”

He had looked down at his hands.

“Because nobody ever showed me how.”

Eric had grown up moving between foster homes.

He never talked about it much.

He never complained.

But Vanessa knew there were wounds hidden beneath his calm personality.

He had spent his entire childhood wondering if someone would choose him.

And now he was standing there, holding a baby someone had abandoned.

Her anger began to mix with confusion.

Then the woman noticed her.

Her eyes widened.

“Vanessa…”

Eric turned around.

The color drained from his face.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa finally stepped into the room.

“DNA results?”

Her voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Eric swallowed.
