Part 1 — I disguised myself as a homeless man and entered the restaurant L007

Customers had gone home.

Employees had been interviewed.

Kyle and Mason were taken to the station for further questioning, though the officers were careful to explain that arrests would depend on what investigators could establish.

I sat at table fourteen.

Henry’s table.

His soup had gone cold.

Amber brought me coffee.

“On the house,” she said.

I almost smiled.

“Technically everything here is on my house.”

That earned the smallest laugh.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“I should’ve told you.”

“About what?”

She sat across from me.

“I knew customers were being charged strangely.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

My disappointment must have shown.

She looked down.

“I didn’t know they were stealing card information.”

“What did you think?”

“That Kyle was manipulating tips.”

That got my attention.

“Explain.”

Servers at Rosie’s pooled a small percentage of tips for bussers and kitchen support.

Kyle had recently taken over closing paperwork.
