There was one more name.
Mine.
FRANK DONNELLY.
Beside it:
THURSDAY — 12:15.
Today’s date.
Today’s time.
I stared at Kyle.
“You knew I was coming.”
He said nothing.
The officer looked at me.
“Mr. Donnelly, who else knew about this visit?”
My mind raced.
Nobody.
I hadn’t told my wife.
I hadn’t told my accountant.
I hadn’t told Amber.
The only person who knew exactly what I intended to do was the former cook who had suggested the disguise.
I felt cold.
Then Amber whispered:
“Frank.”
She pointed at the notebook.
Under my name was another line.
If he notices, use Plan B.
I looked at Kyle.
“What is Plan B?”
For the first time all afternoon, he smiled.
And that frightened me more than anything else I had seen.
Part 2
Police kept Rosie’s closed for the rest of the afternoon.
By four o’clock, yellow tape stretched across the manager’s office.
