He covered his pocket.
“What?”
“What is that?”
“Nothing.”
“Take it out.”
Kyle moved toward her.
“Amber, go back to work.”
She didn’t.
“I said take it out.”
Mason pushed past her.
He wasn’t going toward the office anymore.
He was heading toward the kitchen exit.
I stepped into his path.
He stopped.
For one long second, neither of us moved.
Then he smiled.
Not pleasantly.
“You really want to make this your problem?”
“It already is.”
That was when Kyle made his mistake.
He said my name.
“Frank, move.”
Silence.
Every employee within earshot froze.
Mason’s face went blank.
Amber stared at me.
Henry blinked.
Even Kyle seemed to realize what he had done only after the word was out.
I straightened.
Removed the stained knit cap from my head.
Then wiped some of the makeup and grime from my cheek.
Amber’s mouth fell open.
“Mr. Donnelly?”
“Yes.”
Kyle took one step backward.
