One officer didn’t even look at him.
“Sir, you’ve already had an opportunity to explain your side. Right now, I need you to remain silent while we investigate.”
“But you don’t understand—”
“Stop talking.”
My husband fell silent.
For the first time in seven years, someone had told him no, and he had no power to make that person take it back.
Then the second officer approached me.
“Ma’am, I need to ask you something. Before your father arrived, did you hear any argument or threats?”
I looked at my daughter.
She was staring at the floor, her small fingers wrapped tightly around mine.
“Yes,” I answered. “My husband was forcing her to study. When she tried to get up, he used that hammer.”
The officer’s expression hardened.
“Did you see him strike her?”
“Yes.”
“And did you see him strike your father?”
I swallowed.
