My husband lunged toward me.
My daughter suddenly grabbed his pant leg and shouted, “Don’t touch Mom!”
That tiny interruption gave me enough time to back into the hallway and give the dispatcher our address.
My husband followed, whispering furiously, “Hang up.”
I kept talking.
“My seven-year-old daughter is hurt. My father has been hit in the head. The person who did it is still here.”
The dispatcher told me officers and paramedics were coming.
My husband heard that and stopped advancing.
Then he started cleaning.
He picked up a book. Straightened the chair. Tried to move the hammer.
“Leave it there,” I said.
He ignored me.
That was when my daughter spoke from behind him.
“Mom, he told me not to tell you.”
He turned so quickly that she flinched.
I stepped between them.
“What did he tell you not to tell me?”
She pointed toward the NAIL, then looked at her father.
