My daughter’s last wish was to see the sunrise from the Grand Canyon – Minutes before dawn, a park ranger approached us and said, “Your doctor told me I had to talk to you before the sun came out”

I stood so quickly that my blanket slipped off my shoulders.

“What happened?”

The ranger reached inside his jacket.

Then he pulled out a white envelope with my name written on it.

I stared at him.

“Is that all?”

“That’s all Dr. Carter asked us to deliver. He said it was a medical matter and that he didn’t want anyone here discussing it with you.”

I opened the envelope with trembling hands.

There were only two sentences inside.

Please return to the hospital immediately. Do not make any decisions about Hailey until you know what we have discovered.

I read it twice.

Hailey leaned toward me.

“What does it say?”

“Dr. Carter wants us to come back.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Right now?”

“Yes.”

I crumpled the edge of the paper in my fist.

“No. Not now.”

The ranger shifted uncomfortably.

“Ma’am, I don’t know what this is about.”
