One night, Hailey looked at me and said, “Mom, I don’t want to go to the hospital again. I want to see the Grand Canyon at sunrise.”
I called Dr. Carter that same night to make sure it was safe to make the trip by car.
“If that’s what she wants, take her,” he told me. “Just tell me exactly where you’ll be in case I need to find you.”
And I did.
Two days later, I packed blankets, her medications, and everything else she might need.
We drove all night.
At five in the morning, we were sitting together near the overlook, wrapped in blankets.
Hailey was exhausted, but she smiled.
“I knew it would be beautiful,” she whispered.
The sky was beginning to brighten when a park ranger came hurrying toward us.
“Are you her mother?”
My stomach tightened.
“Yes.”
“Your daughter’s doctor called the park office. He said I had to find you before the sun came up.”
