My stomach tightened.
“Told me what?”
Michael looked directly at me.
Then he said something I will never forget.
“You have absolutely no idea what your son has been doing for my daughter, do you?”
I looked at Noah.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Noah?”
He swallowed hard.
“Mom, I can explain.”
“Explain what?”
Michael leaned forward.
“Please, Noah. Tell her yourself. I think she’s entitled to know.”
My son looked at his hands.
Then, so quietly I almost missed it, he whispered:
“I helped Grace find something that belonged to her mom.”
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
He hesitated.
“And I’ve been helping her do something after school. She didn’t want her dad to find out until she was ready.”
The room fell silent.
And as I looked at the frightened expression on my son’s face, I realized that the beautiful gift he had given Grace was only one part of a much bigger story.
