Part 1 — The Phone Call That Frightened Me
When my fourteen-year-old son/s., Noah, decided to grow his hair long enough to help make a wig for his best friend, I thought I understood just how kindhearted he was.
I watched him endure months of uncomfortable hair, teasing from classmates, and endless questions about why he refused to get a haircut.
I was proud of him.
But the morning after his friend finally received her wig, I got a phone call that made me question how much I really knew about my own child.
“Mrs. Parker? This is Principal Whitaker.”
I immediately straightened in my chair.
“Yes? Is something wrong?”
“Your son is safe,” he said quickly. “But I need you to come to school.”
My heart began pounding.
“Why? What happened?”
There was a brief pause.
“Grace’s father is here. He’s extremely upset, and he insists on speaking with you.”
