My 14-Year-Old Son Grew His Hair to Make a Wig for His Friend With Cancer—The Next Day, Her Father Called Me

Grace promised not to hide her schedule again.

And Noah apologized sincerely.

But I still needed to have a conversation with my son.

Part 5 — The Words My Son Had Never Said

The drive home was unusually quiet.

Noah sat beside me, looking through the passenger window.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he asked:

“Are you really mad at me?”

I considered my answer.

“I’m disappointed that you helped Grace keep a secret about where she was.”

He nodded.

“I wasn’t trying to cause trouble.”

“I know that.”

“She just really wanted to sew.”

“And I understand why.”

He turned toward me.

“But?”

I sighed.

“But helping someone doesn’t mean hiding important information from the people responsible for their safety.”

He looked down.

“I thought her dad would say no.”

“Maybe he would have at first. But you could have asked Ms. Collins to help Grace talk to him.”
