“Emily’s machine.”
The drama teacher, Ms. Collins, came over.
“Yes,” she said gently. “We had it serviced last year. It still works beautifully.”
Michael walked toward it.
He touched the worn wooden surface as if he were afraid it might disappear.
I looked at him.
He didn’t seem angry anymore.
He looked heartbroken.
Ms. Collins explained what had happened.
Years earlier, Michael had donated several boxes of his late wife’s sewing supplies to the school theater department.
At the time, he had been clearing out belongings that were too painful to keep at home.
He hadn’t realized the machine was still being used.
One afternoon, Grace mentioned that her mother used to make costumes.
Noah remembered hearing about the donation and asked Ms. Collins whether anything might still be there.
She checked the school’s inventory.
And they found the machine.
When Grace saw it, she asked to learn how to sew.
