I accepted that not even a victory in court could completely erase the losses.
Meanwhile, my life was changing in ways I hadn’t expected.
I started traveling alone.
First we went to Boston for a weekend. I visited a museum, ate in a small restaurant and spent a whole afternoon reading in a cafe.
I didn’t have to ask anyone if she liked the place.
I didn’t have to change the schedule because someone else was bored.
I didn’t have to pay to impress anyone.
I only did the things I liked.
And I discovered that I was fine in my own company.
One night, my dad invited me to dinner.
I got to him around seven. He had prepared steak, baked potatoes and the salad my mother made when I was a kid.
We sat at the same table at which, the year before, I had changed all my PIN codes.
