Robert replied,
“This house will belong to Margaret for as long as she lives. Neither of you has the right to make decisions for her.”
Linda also heard Sarah urging her brother to find another way.
The next day, Linda was fired.
But the worst revelation was still to come.
“Your husband knew your children might try to pressure you,” Jake said. “That’s why he contacted an attorney and established special conditions regarding ownership of the house.”
I whispered,
“What conditions?”
“The house belongs exclusively to you for the rest of your life. No one can sell or transfer it without your free and informed consent.”
Sarah laughed.
“We all know that. What’s your point?”
Jake stared at her for a long moment.
“The point is that I know what you’re planning to do next week.”
Sarah’s face turned white.
I demanded an explanation.
Jake told me that a few weeks earlier, Linda had accidentally learned about my children’s plan.
