Living on David’s couch wasn’t easy.
Every morning, I woke knowing I had to rebuild my life from almost nothing.
I applied for jobs.
Attended interviews.
Reviewed my debts.
And learned to accept that the lifestyle I’d once enjoyed was no longer realistic.
Eventually, I found an opening for a steady position.
The salary was far below what I’d earned before.
My first instinct was to dismiss it.
Then Ryan called.
“Dad?”
“Hey, buddy.”
“Mom said you’re taking us out Saturday.”
“That’s right.”
There was a pause.
“Are you sure?”
My chest tightened.
“Of course I’m sure.”
“Because Hayley and Holly are really looking forward to it.”
I closed my eyes.
He wasn’t trying to hurt me.
He was simply asking whether he could trust my promise.
“I won’t cancel, Ryan.”
“Okay.”
He sounded relieved.
After we hung up, I sat staring at my phone.
