Hailey was thirteen when the doctors told me that her treatments were no longer working.
We had been fighting her illness for years: hospital rooms, surgeries, medications, and specialists in three different states.
I tried everything.
Her father didn’t.
Two months after Hailey’s diagnosis, my husband packed his bags.
“I can’t live like this,” he said.
He never came back.
From then on, it was just Hailey and me.
I took extra shifts, slept in uncomfortable hospital chairs, learned every medication by heart, and kept telling her we weren’t going to give up.
In the end, even the doctors ran out of options.
“What if we try another treatment?” I asked Dr. Carter.
“We’ve already explored them,” he replied.
“What about another specialist?”
“Claire, I’ve sent Hailey’s case to every place I could.”
“And no one can help her?”
His silence answered me.
