While the ambulance was taking Dad to the hospital, he slipped an envelope in my hand and whispered

Aunt.

I had never been an aunt before. Or, better yet, I was unknowingly.

Lily looked at me seriously for a few seconds, then put up for me.

Do you want to hold him?

I smiled through the tears.

I would like it very much.

We spent the weekend together. We cooked, browsed photo albums and discovered little things that resembled us. We both hate coffee too sweet. We both scared the storms when we were kids. We both used to bite our lip from below when we tried not to cry.

But we also discovered how different our lives were. Emily had grown up in a modest apartment with a mother who had worked in two places to pay the bills. I had grown up in a comfortable home with two parents who, despite the quarrels, had almost always been present.

On the last night, Emily showed me an old photo of Rebecca.
