That night, I asked my father for Emily’s phone number.
-
Are you sure? He asked me.
-
No. But I want to try.
He gave it to me without asking any more questions.
I sat for almost an hour with my phone in my hand, trying to find the right words. What do you say to a person who has been your sister all your life, but you only found out about yesterday? How do you start a conversation that should have taken place twenty years ago?
Finally, I wrote a message.
“Hi, Emily. I’m Sarah, Daniel’s daughter. I recently found out about you. I know this message can come very late, but I would like to talk if you want to.”
I pressed the referral before I changed my mind.
The answer came after almost two hours.
“Hi, Sarah. I don’t know what to say. I’ve been hoping for a long time that one day I’m gonna get a message from you. But I stopped believing it was going to happen. I need a little time.”
