One moment I was walking home.
The next thing I remember is to wake up under the intense lights of a hospital with my husband, Daniel, sitting by my bed.
Her eyes were red.
I tried to move my arms.
That’s when I understood.
I screamed until my throat hurt.
Daniel bowed over me and whispered,
“Emily, I’m here. I’m not going to leave.”
During the first few months, he kept that promise.
He helped me eat.
I brushed my hair.
I was buckling my clothes when I still couldn’t do it alone.
Every time he cried and told him that he was no longer the woman he had married, he denied with his head.
“You’re still Emily.”
I believed him.
That’s why what happened next hurt so much.
Six months after the explosion, one morning I woke up and Daniel was gone.
