Benjamin took a long breath.
“There’s a name written on the back.”
Douglas tightened his grip around my hand.
Lucas leaned toward the phone.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
“Read it.”
Benjamin did.
The first name meant nothing to me.
But the last name did.
Because it was Lucas’s last name.
“Anna Ellis.”
Lucas stumbled backward.
Douglas’s eyes opened wide.
“Anna?”
I looked at him.
“You know her?”
For the first time since I had walked into that hospital room, Douglas looked genuinely terrified.
Not confused.
Not sad.
Certain.
“Hannah,” he whispered.
“Who is Anna Ellis?”
Douglas stared at the photograph in my hand as if forty years had vanished in an instant.
Then he said five words that changed the mystery completely.
“Anna was Margaret’s older sister.”
Lucas shook his head.
“My mother didn’t have a sister.”
Douglas looked at his son.
“Yes, she did.”
