When Douglas and I were 19, we made a promise that if neither of us was married by the time we turned 60, we would find each other again.

Benjamin could have been my father’s child.

Which would make him my half brother.

But it couldn’t also make him Douglas’s brother.

Unless—

I stood.

“No.”

Douglas stared at me.

“What?”

“The DNA.”

I looked at Lucas.

“You said Benjamin is your uncle.”

“Yes.”

“But you haven’t tested him against Douglas.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Lucas glanced at his father.

“Dad was too ill when the results came back. I didn’t want to overwhelm him.”

“So you only know Benjamin is closely related to you.”

“Yes.”

“Then your assumption might be wrong.”

Lucas frowned.

“How?”

I stepped toward him.

“Because you’re assuming the connection comes through Douglas.”

His face changed.

Douglas looked between us.

I heard myself say the words before I fully understood them.

“What if it comes through Margaret?”

Silence.

Lucas slowly lowered his phone.

“My mother?”

“You said Benjamin is genetically close enough to be your uncle. Your mother’s brother would also be your uncle.”
