So much she had never told me.
“Then why our names?”
Douglas answered.
“Marianne said she didn’t write them.”
“Did she know who did?”
“No.”
“Was the baby adopted?”
“Yes.”
“By whom?”
Douglas and Lucas exchanged a look.
I noticed immediately.
“What?”
Lucas cleared his throat.
“That’s where things became complicated.”
“More complicated?”
“Yes.”
I nearly laughed again.
Douglas moved his hand across the blanket until it rested close to mine.
I looked at it.
Then placed my hand over his.
His fingers were cold.
“Tell me.”
Lucas took a breath.
“The adoption never went through.”
I frowned.
“Why not?”
“Marianne changed her mind.”
That made sense.
“She kept the baby?”
“No.”
I stared at him.
“Then what happened?”
“No one knows.”
I removed my hand from Douglas’s.
“What do you mean, no one knows?”
“According to Marianne, the day before she was supposed to leave the hospital with the baby, your mother came to see her.”
