“Should I know her?”
“I didn’t.”
Lucas leaned forward.
“Dad’s investigator found her.”
“When?”
“2005.”
“What did she say?”
Douglas stared at the ceiling.
“She refused to speak with him.”
“Why?”
“She said the past belonged where it was.”
I almost laughed.
“People say that when they don’t have to live with the consequences.”
Douglas looked at me.
“That’s exactly what Margaret said.”
Again, I wished I could have known her.
“What happened next?”
“Nothing for almost a year.”
Lucas folded his hands.
“Then Marianne contacted my mother.”
“Why your mother?”
“She didn’t trust Dad.”
I glanced at Douglas.
“I can’t imagine why. You look terribly suspicious.”
His weak smile returned.
“Always have.”
Lucas continued.
“Marianne agreed to meet Mom at a restaurant outside Cleveland.”
“And?”
“She told my mother the baby in the photograph was her daughter.”
I stared at him.
“Marianne’s?”
“Yes.”
