Evelyn covered her mouth.
Victoria continued.
“She further requests that her medical records and the children’s birth records remain confidential. Should you wish to establish paternity, please contact my office within thirty days.”
The kitchen was utterly silent.
“Date?” I asked.
“May twenty-second.”
The twins had been born in May.
I looked at Evelyn. “You sent that to me?”
“Yes.”
“And the hospital records?”
“I sent them with it.”
Victoria turned a page.
“There is a note from the attorney saying the documents were returned unopened two weeks later.”
“Why?”
“Because you instructed Clara not to bring personal correspondence to you while the divorce proceedings were ongoing,” Victoria said.
I felt the truth strike in layers.
I had given a simple order. Clara had followed it. My mother had expanded it into a wall. Evelyn had sent letters into that wall, believing I had chosen not to see them.
