This single father struggled to adopt 5 siblings under the age of 7 before they were separated — the judge burst into tears upon learning of his motive.

“Honour, my client’s childhood is not being judged.

“No,” said the judge carefully. But their motivation is relevant.

He leaned towards me.

“Mr. Carter, no one is asking you to give up your dignity. But he’s asking for extraordinary responsibility. I need to understand why he’s willing to sacrifice his money, his career and his freedom for five children he barely knows.

The room was silent.

For twenty years, I had avoided telling someone the whole story.

But when I saw Eli comforting his brothers, he was no longer standing in a courtroom.

I was nine again, waiting with four terrified children who shared my last name.

“My parents died in the fire in our house when I was nine,” I began.

The judge slowly lowered his pen.

I was the eldest of five brothers. Same as Eli.

My voice was shaking, but I continued.

“No host family wanted to welcome us all. So we were sent to three different homes in three different counties.

I could see it as clearly as if it were happening again.

“My younger brother, Jamie, had a red toy truck that was missing a wheel. When the social workers arrived, he held on to my jacket and begged me not to let them take him.

The judge took off his glasses.

I promised him we’d meet again. But when he was put in the car, he started screaming my name. I ran behind the vehicle through the parking lot until I fell to the ground.

Someone behind me started crying.

I never saw Jamie again.

My words were choppy.

“I found one of my sisters when I was twenty-four. Another one of my brothers died before I could find him. Two others are still missing from my life. Birthdays, graduations, weddings… we lost everything, not because we stopped loving each other, but because someone decided that separating was the most practical.

I looked directly at the judge.

“When I saw these children, I didn’t see strangers. I saw Jamie holding that red truck. I saw my sisters crying in the back seat. I saw myself making a promise that was too young and powerless to keep.

Eli’s eyes were filled with tears.

“I couldn’t save my family,” I whispered. But maybe I can save yours.

No one spoke.

The state attorney returned to his table without asking any other questions.

The judge looked away for a moment, wiped his eyes and put on his glasses again.

“Eli,” he said softly, “could you come closer?”

Eli walked to the stand.

“What do you want me to understand?” the judge asked.

Eli looked back at his brothers.

“I can sleep anywhere,” he said. I don’t need a room of my own. I don’t need new toys. I just need to know where they are when I wake up.

The judge closed his eyes.

When he reopened them, his voice trembled.

The plan to separate these children is suspended.

A gasp went through the room.

“Temporary custody shall be granted to Mr. Carter, subject to immediate home inspection, supervision and compliance with all authorization requirements.

For a moment of wonder, I couldn’t move.

Then Lila ran to me.

Does that mean we go together?

I fell to my knees while the five children surrounded me.

“Yes,” I said, hugging them with all the strength I could. All of us.
